Navigating controversial topics in the workplace
Navigating controversial topics in the workdistribution policyGenerally speaking, most people know that conversations that tunke into politics, religion, or intimate relationships are best to avoid in professional settings. Yet in the current political climate, taboo topics are becoming harder and harder to avoid, causing people to share more opinions and exercise a lot less restraint and privacy in the workplace.Regardless of who brings hot button issues into the conversation, its always best to be prepared to deal with them without putting your foot in your mouth or offending someone. Here are some tips on how to keep it classy (and keep yourself out of trouble) when controversy arises at work.Always follow the rules.Your company almost certainly has some policies in place regarding religious or political expression. You might leid be allowed to hang up a campaign button or bumper sticker in your cubicle, for instance, or decorate your desk with anything a coworker might deem offens ive. Take a quick glance at the employee handbook now and then to make sure youre coloring between the lines.Listen, smile, and keep quiet. Its easier said than done, but if the conversation around you turns heated, its often best to just sit back and take in the opinions of everyone around you. If you do more listening than talking on average, then you have fewer opportunities to say something youll regret or that will get you in trouble.Unless youre in a situation where a legitimate wrong or injustice is taking place, if you find yourself wanting to say somethingand asking yourself Is this okay to say?chances are you should probably hold that thought and keep it to yourself.Document wrongdoings. If you have a coworker (or boss) whos spewing offensive commentary or bullying you or someone elseor, worse, engaging in hate speechthen youre going to want to build a case before you do anything or tattle. Have something tangible you can present to HR if that becomes your best option. Frame your concerns in terms of safeguarding the health of the company and culture. If youre upset, say something.Rather than making assumptions or leaping to conclusions about a persons character, sometimes its better to just be up-front and frank with a coworker who has offended you. This doesnt mean leveling accusations. It means approaching that person respectfully with an olive branch and a chance to talk things through. Dont accuseexplain. Tell him or her why youre upset. Having the confidence to do this in the first place is a tricky skill to master, but this can be quite effective in neutralizing an otherwise fraught situation.Own your mistakes. If youre the one making people uncomfortableeven unintentionallyown up to it, take responsibility, apologize, and change your behavior. Otherwise your job might end up on the line. Remember, youre not the only one in the office whose opinions and feelings matter. The bottom lineIf a conversation arises and you have passionate feelings, by al l means, speak up. But if you do, keep your tone and language as professional as possible. Try to diffuse rather than accuse. Ask questions rather than asserting strong statements. Keep an open mind and your emotions at an even keelits possible to be both passionate and polite.

Has Your Resume Become Obsolete
Has Your Resume Become Obsolete Even with new innovations like LinkedIn, website portfolios and unique bewerbungsgesprch questions, one part of the job application process has always remained the same the resume. Its a standard document that highlights your recent and relevant experiences. Its your one-sheet your main rationale for getting this job.But what if it didnt have to be? According to top CEOs, resumes arent the best identifier for good hires. Jeff Weiner, CEO of LinkedIn, believes that the key to finding strong talent isnt looking at more resumes its about looking in non-traditional places.Speaking at the ASU GSV Summit, Weiner acknowledged that companies need to update the way theyve traditionally hired people. There are qualities that have a tendency to be completely overlooked when people are sifting through resumes or LinkedIn profiles, Weiner said. And yet, increasingly, we find that these are the kinds of people that make the biggest difference within our organizati on.For individuals who have many skills but few experiences, resumes arent an accurate summary of their potential. Resumes do a good job providing a timeline of your work history, but they focus on aspects that dont necessarily apply to the work youll be doing with a specific company.Laszlo Bock, Googles former head of philanthropisch resources, told The New York Times that employees without any college education are just as (if not more) valuable as those with a traditional degree. After two or three years, your ability to perform is completely unrelated to how you performed when you were in school, Bock said. The skills you required in college are very different. Youre also fundamentally a different person. You learn and grow, you think about things differently.Google famously used to ask everyone for a transcript and G.P.A.s and test scores, but we dont anymore, Bock said. We found that they dont predict anything.Weiner agrees. Its one of the reasons he supports LinkedIns internsh ip program, REACH, and its focus on a new kind of recruiting.Yes, degrees from specific schools can lead us to finding incredible talent. But its not the exclusionary domain of incredible talent, Weiner said. This program is trying to get away from this idea that everyone on the engineering team, everyone we recruit, has to have come from a specific school and has to have a specific kind of degree.Unlike a traditional internship program, REACH is an apprenticeship. For six months, participants work full-time as a member of LinkedIns functional engineering team to learn from managers. By proving their skills at the end of the program, successful apprentices have the potential to be offered a full-time software engineering role. Were looking for folks with a growth mindset, Weiner said. Were looking for people with the dedication, with the work ethic. We want to give them a shot. And what were finding is, these people are incredibly talented, and they need a chance.Bock agrees. You wan t people who like figuring stuff out where there is no obvious answer. So, while this does mean that your resume has less of an impact on your overall hiring, it means that within your next job interview you should focus on how you can put your hard-earned skills to use for the company. Keep the focus on your skills and youll go far.Theres just so much talent to be had if people are open to finding this talent in different places, Weiner said.
